Headphones have come a long way in the past one hundred years. Back then they consisted of a single earpiece held tightly against one ear and was the only way anyone could listen to transmitted sound.

This was before the days of amplifiers. Headphones were usually use in radio stations and not the home market.

Today, however, there is virtually no one who has not heard of, or used, a set of headphones. They have literally exploded in popularity since the onset of mobile phones, mp3 players, ipods and the like.

The most common used wires to connect the headpiece to the equipment and this restricted the movements of the user to within range - in other words, as far as the wire would stretch!

The advent of the wireless headphones set the user free to move about whilst listening to the preferred channel.

The introduction of Bluetooth technology has given the user freedom unparalleled in history. The headset ‘hooks’ on to the sound being transmitted from as far as ten meters away.

Since most people carry the transmitter - be it mobile phone with radio or mp3 players - with them distance is not a problem.

However, imagine being able to move around your house while listening to your favorite music without blasting the neighbors!

Perhaps the best thing about today’s headsets is the quality of sound. The music is beamed directly to your ears without the distraction of peripheral noise.

911 And Cell Phones

When you call 911 from a land phone, even if you don’t know where you are, the 911 system is able to locate you and send help as needed. Your landline telephone is connected to the lines on the poles which makes a computer in the dispatch center show the number and address of the phone you're using.

Cell Phones Don't Work the Same

When you make a 911 call on a cell phone, you are sending signals through the air. The tower that picks up your phone's signal may or may not be near.

Unless you are able to tell the 911 dispatcher where you are at, it may be very hard for them to locate you.

If you happen to connect to a 911 call center that is not local, they may not be able to help you as quickly as they will need to contact the 911 service providers in your area, thereby slowing the dispatching of help to the caller.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has required that all wireless carriers be able to pinpoint your location for the 911 dispatchers, but the rule is coming in phases and there are plenty of exceptions.

When you call 911 from a cell phone, the call often lands in a regional center. A call-taker in a far-away city or county may answer your call. To get help to you, there are two pieces of information the call-taker needs to know immediately:

1. Tell the call-taker which city you're calling from first. They can forward your call to the right center if need be.

2. Tell the call-taker what type of emergency you have. This will let them be able to inform the other centers of the nature of such an emergency. Giving priority to serious situations first.

Dispatch centers may vary from one center to another, with the right information, the call-taker will transfer you to the right center.

Nowadays with the GPS facility on most phones they are able to track you down better and sent the help from the apropriate response center.

The availability of Wi-Fi hotspots in major cities in the world has made laptops and even Wi-Fi-enabled mobile phones and PDAs truly mobile computers.

People who are always on the go such as business travellers benefit from this because they can access their e-mail and other information from any place where these hotspots are available.

However, in spite of the convenience that Wi-Fi brings, there is also a risk involved in using it.

Most Wi-Fi hotspots are unsecure. Because of this, data that are sent through these wireless networks can be read by anyone on the network who has the right tools.

Packet sniffers are a good example of such a tool. Unsecure networks are also called ‘poisoned hotspots’ because of the penchant of hackers and identity thieves for stealing other people’s sensitive information.

The good thing is that there are several ways that users can do to protect themselves. One security measure is by turning off file sharing in the computer before connecting to a hotspot.

This prevents other users to see what is in your shared folder and mess with it. Another measure is by turning on their computer’s personal firewall. They basically help restrict traffic to and from their computers.

This is an important tool that people shouldn’t go without. There are a number of good free firewalls out there which why there’s no reason for users to not protect themselves.

Finally, if one is in a hotspot but he/she doesn’t want to connect to the network, it would be good to disable their wireless adapter. This helps prevent people from unwittingly sending out data that others may sniff.

The Difference Between LCD And Plasma TVs

When going to your electronics store to purchase a new television set, consumers should be educated as to the difference between LCD (liquid crystal display) and plasma televisions.

Each has their pros and cons, but both will give the consumer a phenomenal picture.

Plasma televisions work by the electrifying of the gases neon and xenon to make plasma. These televisions come in sizes between 32 and 63" in size, have flat panel displays, and produce a clear crisp picture.

A consumer can view a plasma television in a 160 degree angle and are made for high definition viewing with the proper signal.

Some of the downfalls of a plasma television include increased cost, screen burn-in, and the production of annoying buzzing noise at altitudes higher than 6,500 feet.

LCD televisions work in a similar way except they use liquid crystal instead of neon and xenon. They come in sizes between 20 and 50" in size, have flat panel displays, and usually have a built-in tuner, not to mention a clear sharp picture.

A consumer can view LCD televisions in a 120-130degree angle. They operate well in high altitudes and are energy efficient.

The downfalls of a LCD television include a slightly slower response time which can produce a trailing effect, limited viewing angle, and some color concerns due to lighting issues where the television is placed in the room.

Depending on what the consumer prefers, both televisions are worth the money spent on them. LCD’s are still better for computer use is desired, but there are some plasma manufacturers producing sets that can be used as a computer monitor as well.
